It is a tale from a time younger than ours, where love and forgiveness overcome fear, sadness and greed; where nature triumphs over the poison of industry.

A Miller’s daughter is swept away in the mill race, her parents left transformed by grief. The people of Greenwater live in fear as their children disappear - suspecting they are being taken and drowned by the Miller - Jenny - whilst her devastated husband creates an industrial complex and an army of workers, his skills as a magical toymaker transformed to pursue wealth. Many in the town benefit from the riches, but the society becomes divided and a social wasteland mirrors the industrial one. An unexpected return precipitates change - but it’s a race between disaster and redemption.

The narrative was written by Jessie for a collaborative live production with Ballet Folk. In the resultant show she shares the stage with the musicians (Murray and Adam) and six dancers. All nine interact throughout, transporting the audience to the valley of Greenwater in order to witness the unfolding of a dark yet triumphant story. The production is originally the brainchild of Ballet Folk UK founder and pioneering Director/Choreographer Deborah Norris and co-produced by Katie Whitehouse, From The Whitehouse. So far performed live at Cambridge Folk Festival, Purbeck Valley Folk Festival and Summer By The River Festival, with more shows to be announced.

Both “mesmerising and hypnotic” [Songlines] Murray and “intoxicating – virtuoso fiddle player” [The Times] Adam wondered how this would work, being used to creating their music, whether live or recorded, on the spot. Recent experience writing for a BBC Radio 4 play Lud-In-The-Mist gave them the confidence to create a skeletal structure, allowing them to improvise within sections of the story, and to respond to themes laid out by Jessie’s writing: “I wrote the poem in collaboration with Deborah Norris and talking to the team,” says Jessie. “It’s a huge narrative – 23 pages - drawing on fundamental human concerns such as the environment, concerns about over industrialisation and the flow of the river. The story has a traditional feel but is very relevant to current times.” The location for the story was inspired by Stott Park Mill and the surrounding Lake District and the underlying narrative is that of conservation and protection of the riverways of Britain.

A tale by poet/storyteller/narrator Jessie Summerhayes
Music by Adam Summerhayes - violin and Murray Grainger - accordion
created with Deborah Norris and Ballet Folk
Recorded, produced and mixed by Murray Grainger UNDER THE EAVES UTE 006
Mastered by Jon Astley. Originally meeting through folk legends Show Of Hands, The Ciderhouse Rebellion found that their create seascapes and laments, prayers and evocations danced perfectly with Merryn’s poignant and angelic vocals. Their prolific original songwriting led to an incredible album The Devil’s On The Mast - out June 2nd 2023.

Master improvisers, the Ciderhouse Rebellion works differently to most artists — rather than engaging in a process of rehearsing and refining, Adam Summerhayes (fiddle) and Murray Grainger (accordion) create music in the moment, through improvisation and instinct, honed over years of working together, two lifetimes of musical study and a rare, magical connection. Kirsty Merryn has been working for many years as a solo performer and songwriter, and brought her own skills and experience to the project.

The creative process: Adam and Kirsty wrote the lyrics for all of the tracks, bar two with older words, and then, in separate rooms, connected by headphones and the freezing silence of the moors, the trio just ... made music. The songs you hear are almost all first takes — not only the first time that they were recorded, but the first time they were played ... something captured in the moment of its creation. This dynamic, challenging and — for Kirsty — entirely new way of working takes a remarkable amount of trust, but the end result is something organic and beautiful that couldn’t be captured in any other way.
“How is it that we, in our long history, denigrate and ignore so many of the folk who are the lifeblood of our society?” - sleeve notes from debut album The Devil’s On The Mast

The Ciderhouse Rebellion have cooked up a bit of a storm in just three years with five albums, multiple FATEA awards and sensational live sets across the country - including at The Manchester Folk Festival.

Tales of Colonsay is the third collaboration with Summerhayes’ daughter Jessie - who is an award-winning poet and spoken-word artist, and the second in which a very specific landscape serves as the creative inspiration (the first being Ironstone Tales).

In this case the basis of the album is a collection of poetry Jessie wrote for her father’s birthday, inspired by one particular journey to and on the Inner Hebridean island of Colonsay. 11 tracks drawn from the landscape itself, tracking her movements from Oban, across the sea and then along the pristine Atlantic shoreline on Colonsay, culminating in the searing, blow-away track that is Hangman’s Rock.
There’s an intense reciprocity between the trio, even though they recorded the album in three separate rooms, with Jessie reciting the poems in one, while Grainger and Summerhayes improvised, weaving everything together to create an intricate and beautiful piece of work. “The words are the music and the music is the words and it’s an incredible inter-relationship of poetry to music that you don’t often come across,” says Grainger.

These poems are many things, a loving gift, a celebration of the love for a place, an echo of childhood wonder, a terrified vision of the wormholes in reality that lead only to decay and death, a clear-eyed view of the horror that human emotion can bring - a promise of nature’s revolution against our crimes … but, above all, they are heartbreakingly beautiful.

Jessie explains “these poems arose from movement, the first written on the ferry-crossing as a beloved and much visited island crept closer, the rest walking along the shoreline. The stories stepped out from the shifting landscape around me: gannets fishing in a stormy sea, tormentil on grassy slopes, or a washed-up whale’s whitening bones. Each poem is very much an expression of a particular moment in a particular space — they do not tell the tale of Colonsay’s coastline, they tell the tales it told me one week in July.”

Although organically created, with the music being written spontaneously, the album is structured from the original passage towards the island, then around and within it. Jessie continues “I arranged the poems into an order — starting with the ferry and Queen’s Bay, travelling northwards and eventually circling back around to the south-east coast. As I read the poems, the improvised music then continued the chain of storytelling, drawing on the descriptions and feelings caught in the poetry — as we performed together, the conversation continued, and that week in July was given another voice”

The Ciderhouse Rebellion’s Adam Summerhayes and Murray Grainger are known for their profound ability to create music spontaneously, with no prior planning nor conscious thought. It’s something they have been mastering for some years now, and are becoming increasingly recognised for.
