name.

Dave Mallinson has been known as Mally since his first day at school. He has been involved in music since the age of nine, when he learned to play the recorder. In his mid teens he played the pop music of the era on guitar, but his interest was always little more than half-hearted. In his late teens he discovered folk music but still the guitar was unable to inspire him.

At the age of twenty two, Mally discovered the melodeon and immediately felt the musical stimulation he had unconsciously been seeking for many years. Practice was no longer a chore, it was his favourite occupation, an addiction even.

Although starting late in life makes virtuoso status unattainable, it is still possible to reach a good standard. Mally, through lengthy practice, hard work and dogged determination, has managed to achieve a high level of competence and has become a well respected player. However, his constant struggle to maintain his skill makes his days as a beginner never seem far away. He is well able to recognise, and is very much aware of, the problems and difficulties facing beginners and novices.

During the early days of learning a musical instrument, many budding musicians fall by the wayside. They soon tire of playing the same half dozen tunes over and over again and, because they are unable to find other suitable melodies to sustain their interest, they drop out. To prevent boredom getting the upper hand, it is necessary to quickly build up a reasonably sized repertoire. Mally has identified 101 relatively simple, but interesting, Irish tunes and presents them here, in graded order, to increase your chances of success. This book will help you quickly boost your repertoire and get you up and running in the Irish sessions in no time, giving you many hours of enjoyment in the process.

The tune settings in this book are all ‰Û÷session friendly‰۪, i.e. you can learn them exactly as written and know that you will have a perfectly acceptable version. However, it can be unwise to learn a tune from only one source and, when possible, it‰۪s best, when learning a new tune, to pay heed to other books, recordings and live performances.

Books will only help you to learn the notes of a tune. To pick up the rhythm of Irish music you must devote a large amount of time listening to both recordings and live musicians. Of greatest importance, you must practise; the value of this book is directly proportional to the number of hours a day you spend practising.

Chord arrangements are more or less as played on the soundtrack, but nevertheless, are only emphasis is not on the reels. Loosely speaking, the jigs and reels found in this book are the next most popular after those found in 100 Essential Irish Session Tunes. Another major feature of this book is the prominence given to the various other types of tune, such as slides, set dances, hornpipes etc. They always come a poor third to reels and jigs, but they constantly crop up in the sessions with such a significant frequency that they cannot be ignored. There are hornpipes, marches, a strong selection of jigs, some slip jigs and one or two other well-known melodies to spice up your repertoire.
100 tunes (14 hornpipes, 15 slides, 34 jigs, 23 reels and 14 miscellaneous tunes) with chords, classified and alphabetical (with alternative titles) indexes.

Important note from Mally
The tune settings in this book are all 'session friendly', i.e. you can learn them exactly as written and know that you will have a perfectly acceptable version. It is important to note that the settings in this book are greatly influenced by the instrument I play, the D/G melodeon. I've made a conscious effort to allow this to happen in order to give the book its own unique character. The list below would constitute an excellent nucleus towards forming a valuable Irish music library, many of them are available from mally.com. When choosing books, take care not to be put off by the title; some of the best sources of tunes are from tuition books. hat" and would be shunned by many seasoned players. However, it's absolutely vital that you are familiar with these tunes, as you'll find them cropping up time and time again. They are the foundation on which Irish music sessions are built. You could say that these tunes are even more essential than those in 100 Essential Irish Session Tunes. Every type of dance tune is represented: reels, jigs, hornpipes, polkas, slides, slip jigs, marches, set dances, waltzes, mazurkas, flings, a varsovienne, a barn dance, a single reel and a single jig

The tune settings in this book are all ‰Û÷session friendly‰۪, i.e. you can learn them exactly as written and know that you will have a perfectly acceptable version. However, I consider it unwise to learn a tune from only one source and I would suggest strongly that, when learning a new tune, you pay heed to other books, recordings and live performances. It is important to note that the settings in this book are greatly influenced by the instrument I play, the D/G melodeon (an accordion system rarely found in Irish music circles - B/C and C sharp/D are the norm). I‰۪ve made a conscious effort to allow this to happen in order to give the book its own unique character. The list below would constitute an excellent nucleus towards forming a valuable Irish music library. When choosing books, take care not to be put off by the title; some of the best sources of tunes are from tuition books. you will have a perfectly acceptable version. I’ve made a conscious effort to allow this to happen in order to give the book its own unique character. When choosing books, take care not to be put off by the title; some of the best sources of tunes are from tuition books. Just because the book cover says ‘Learn to Play the Banjo’, don’t think it’s of no use if you play the tin whistle.

Books will only help you to learn the notes of a tune. To pick up the rhythm of Irish music you must devote a large amount of time listening to both recordings and live musicians. Of greatest importance, you must practise; the value of this book is directly proportional to the number of hours a day you spend practising.

Chord arrangements are more or less as played on the soundtrack, but nevertheless, are only suggestions. The dominant chords (i.e. D in the key of G, A in the key of D and E in the key of A etc.) throughout this book are noted as plain major chords, whereas many musicians prefer to play the seventh (D7, A7, E7 etc.). Feel free to play either type of chord as the mood takes you.

Suggested ornamentation has been kept to a minimum and is Kirkpatrick shares the passion that has led him to become one of the foremost champions and interpreters of our native traditions. Driven always by his love of dancing, John has constantly been striving to inject the maximum amount of energy and life into these lovely simple old tunes. In fact, as any dance musician will tell you, the simpler the tune is, the more opportunity you are allowed to add your own kind of zest into its performance.

Here John presents 101 examples that are tailor-made for the strong rhythmic approach inspired by English dance steps and rhythms. With melody, chords and variations, the book is ideally suited for any instrument, but one of the prime factors in the selection of the tunes has been the fact that they sit so happily on the push-pull squeeze-box scale. Although the melodeon came along long after the style and substance of this music was well established, it's breathtaking how perfectly the one can match the other.

With over forty years' playing experience behind him, you couldn't be in safer hands.
