It reflects very closely the repertoire we play at our local session.‰۝ Another friend commented at Cleethorpes Folk Festival, ‰ÛÏMally, you do a gross injustice to some really good and useful tunes by labelling them ‰Û÷Easy Peasy‰۪, it gives the impression that they are only of any use to beginners to cut their teeth on.‰۝ ‰ÛÏVery true,‰۝ I thought, ‰ÛÏI play many of these tunes myself at dances, in sessions and for the morris dancers. Wouldn‰۪t it be a great to extend Easy Peasy into a series.‰۝ The idea was born, and soon developed into this set of four books which contain the most popular tunes that are played in English pub sessions, at folk festivals and by country dance musicians and morris players. Each book has its own theme and identity. Given average luck, with these tunes under your belt, you‰۪ll be able to join in most of the time.

Because most traditional airs only require the fourteen notes D, E, F sharp, G, A, B, C, C sharp, D, E, F sharp, G, A and B, I decided it would be a good idea to continue the theme, meaning all the tunes can be played in the first position on the top three strings of the fiddle, all the notes are in the range of the wooden flute and tin whistle and all the music is within the scope of the D/G melodeon without accidentals.

Chord arrangements are more or less as played on the soundtrack, but nevertheless, are only suggestions. The dominant chords (i.e. D in the key of G, A in the key of D and E in the key of A etc.) throughout these books are noted as plain major chords, whereas many musicians prefer to play the seventh (D7, A7, E7 etc.). Feel free to play either type of chord as the mood takes you.

You‰۪ll notice many of the tunes are not English. It‰۪s the pubs, sessions, folk festivals, ceilidhs etc. that are English. In, what might be termed, a general English session, melodies from Northumberland, Ireland, Scotland, America, France and Scandinavia are to be heard alongside English airs, which tend to be associated with the more southern regions of the country

Hundreds of personalities, records, bands, books and sessions have, unknowingly, made tiny, almost imperceptible contributions to the settings and choice of the tunes found in these books (some of the more influential are listed below). They have also been moulded further by the limitations of my instrument, the D/G melodeon, and, of course, the fourteen note rule. All the settings are my own versions and every tune has, to a greater or lesser degree, my own personal stamp on it. But, I‰۪m sure you‰۪ll find all the tunes ‰Û÷session friendly‰۪, you can learn them exactly as written and have a perfectly acceptable version. However, I consider it unwise to learn a tune from only one source and I would suggest strongly that, when learning a new tune, you pay heed to other books, recordings and live It reflects very closely the repertoire we play at our local session.‰۝ Another friend commented at Cleethorpes Folk Festival, ‰ÛÏMally, you do a gross injustice to some really good and useful tunes by labelling them ‰Û÷Easy Peasy‰۪, it gives the impression that they are only of any use to beginners to cut their teeth on.‰۝ ‰ÛÏVery true,‰۝ I thought, ‰ÛÏI play many of these tunes myself at dances, in sessions and for the morris dancers.

However, I consider it unwise to learn a tune from only one source and I would suggest strongly that, when learning a new tune, you pay heed to other books, recordings and live He has been involved in music since the age of nine, when he learned to play the recorder. In his mid teens he played the pop music of the era on guitar, but his interest was always little more than half-hearted. In his late teens he discovered folk music but still the guitar was unable to inspire him.

At the age of twenty two, Mally discovered the melodeon and immediately felt the musical stimulation he had unconsciously been seeking for many years. Mally, through lengthy practice, hard work and dogged determination, has managed to achieve a high level of competence and has become a well respected player. However, his constant struggle to maintain his skill makes his days as a beginner never seem far away. He is well able to recognise, and is very much aware of, the problems and difficulties facing beginners and novices.

During the early days of learning a musical instrument, many budding musicians fall by the wayside. They soon tire of playing the same half dozen tunes over and over again and, because they are unable to find other suitable melodies to sustain their interest, they drop out. To prevent boredom getting the upper hand, it is necessary to quickly build up a reasonably sized repertoire. Mally has identified 101 relatively simple, but interesting, Irish tunes and presents them here, in graded order, to increase your chances of success. This book will help you quickly boost your repertoire and get you up and running in the Irish sessions in no time, giving you many hours of enjoyment in the process.

The tune settings in this book are all ‰Û÷session friendly‰۪, i.e. you can learn them exactly as written and know that you will have a perfectly acceptable version. emphasis is not on the reels. Loosely speaking, the jigs and reels found in this book are the next most popular after those found in 100 Essential Irish Session Tunes. Another major feature of this book is the prominence given to the various other types of tune, such as slides, set dances, hornpipes etc. They always come a poor third to reels and jigs, but they constantly crop up in the sessions with such a significant frequency that they cannot be ignored. There are hornpipes, marches, a strong selection of jigs, some slip jigs and one or two other well-known melodies to spice up your repertoire.
100 tunes (14 hornpipes, 15 slides, 34 jigs, 23 reels and 14 miscellaneous tunes) with chords, classified and alphabetical (with alternative titles) indexes.

Important note from Mally
The tune settings in this book are all 'session friendly', i.e. you can learn them exactly as written and know that you will have a perfectly acceptable version. However, I consider it unwise to learn a tune from only one source and I would suggest strongly that, when learning a new tune, you pay heed to settings in other books, on recordings and what you hear down the pub. It is important to note that the settings in this book are greatly influenced by the instrument I play, the D/G melodeon. I've made a conscious effort to allow this to happen in order to give the book its own unique character. The list below would constitute an excellent nucleus towards forming a valuable Irish music library, many of them are available from mally.com. When choosing books, take care not to be put off by the title; some of the best sources of tunes are from tuition books. Just because the book cover says 'Learn to Play the Banjo', don't think it's of no use if you play the tin whistle.
Books will only help you to learn the notes of a tune. To pick up the rhythm of Irish music you must devote a large amount of time listening to both recordings and live musicians. Of greatest importance, you must practise; the value of these books is directly proportional to the number of hours a day you spend practising.

Contents

Reels

Anything However, it's absolutely vital that you are familiar with these tunes, as you'll find them cropping up time and time again. They are the foundation on which Irish music sessions are built. You could say that these tunes are even more essential than those in 100 Essential Irish Session Tunes. Every type of dance tune is represented: reels, jigs, hornpipes, polkas, slides, slip jigs, marches, set dances, waltzes, mazurkas, flings, a varsovienne, a barn dance, a single reel and a single jig

The tune settings in this book are all ‰Û÷session friendly‰۪, i.e. you can learn them exactly as written and know that you will have a perfectly acceptable version. Kirkpatrick shares the passion that has led him to become one of the foremost champions and interpreters of our native traditions. Driven always by his love of dancing, John has constantly been striving to inject the maximum amount of energy and life into these lovely simple old tunes. In fact, as any dance musician will tell you, the simpler the tune is, the more opportunity you are allowed to add your own kind of zest into its performance.

Here John presents 101 examples that are tailor-made for the strong rhythmic approach inspired by English dance steps and rhythms. With melody, chords and variations, the book is ideally suited for any instrument, but one of the prime factors in the selection of the tunes has been the fact that they sit so happily on the push-pull squeeze-box scale. Although the melodeon came along long after the style and substance of this music was well established, it's breathtaking how perfectly the one can match the other.

With over forty years' playing experience behind him, you couldn't be in safer hands. It's full to bursting with useful ideas, hints, tricks, tips, techniques and great tunes to improve your playing style, speed up the learning process and to give you a better understanding of the instrument. It's been a massive project, but it's been well worth it, I've learned such a lot by writing it. When I got my first instrument there wasn't a single D/G tutor book on the market, and even now, fifty years on, you'll be lucky to find a dozen, so acquire every book you can. If you are new to the instrument, use this book in conjunction with simpler tutors. The lessons start at rock bottom, but the degree of difficulty rises steeply. Above the music, in addition to the fingering instructions, there are icons with names you might find corny and mildly amusing. However, they are essential to describe the fingering patterns, and a useful handle to help you apply them to other tunes.

You might think this book is a bit too complicated to be called “Beginners”. Yes, that may be so, but if you want to become proficient, you must practise, and without guidance you can easily find yourself practising unsound techniques. It's no use waiting until you've formed bad habits before you think you are ready to tackle these lessons. Once you've learned a tune thoroughly, it can be very difficult to change the way you play it, after discovering a superior fingering pattern. Presented in this book is knowledge that has slowly trickled in during half a century of study. It's my hope and desire that it will inspire players, boost their progress, propel their playing to excellence, and spur them on to perform with far greater skill, dexterity and aplomb, than I have been able to achieve.

Instant Melodeon, Absolute Beginners and Tunes and Techniques are three melodeon are all excellent tunes, well-known and popular, but not over-played, hackneyed or obscure. Most of the tunes can be heard on recordings by notable bands and personalities, they are all currently in use by traditional musicians and are regularly played at concerts, dances and pub sessions. All of the tunes introduce some aspect of melodeon playing, and they are all presented in their normal keys. Learn 75 traditional tunes from England, Scotland, Wales, Shetland, Orkney, Ireland, France, Flanders, Canada and America. Morris and Playford tunes. Reels, jigs, hornpipes, polkas, slides, mazurkas, waltzes, barn dances, marches, rants, slip jigs and triple hornpipes. The tunes are perfect for pub sessions, country dances, ceilidhs, barn dances and hoedowns.

"Welcome to my melodeon book.

Instant Melodeon, Absolute Beginners and Tunes and Techniques are three melodeon tuition books designed to be used simultaneously, not in any particular sequence."

Track Listing

 1. Like the eponymous sea-mist, which rolls in both east and west from the Irish and North Seas, the music in their debut record varies in denseness and viscosity. It is at once tangible and fleeting, headily thick one moment and thinly dispersed the next. Three masterful instrumentalists provide an improvised space from which Molly’s pure and unadulterated vocals can emerge. The Haar is a collection of traditional Irish songs tackling love, poverty and oppression – common subjects that link the peoples of these islands. It would be a much longer piece to describe the background of the musicians in any way other than to quote from their publicity material. The band combine unbelievable fiddle virtuosity from international star Adam Summerhayes; outrageous brilliance from world number one recorder genius, Piers Adams; incredibly high-ABV insanity from accordion master, Murray Grainger; positively feverish power from bass legend, Malcolm Creese; and dazzling bodhran playing from king of folk percussion, Cormac Byrne . Any one of the five has a musical pedigree that you can only admire, collectively they work superbly together and it makes for a stunning sound (which they call Celtic Gypsy Klezmer) melding Scottish/Irish folk, gypsy and Eastern European tunes and rhythms. The other aspect to mention is the humour. The album tracks are titled in some way to give a link to the dodo. To give a couple of examples: Flight Of The Dodo is described as Commemorating the invention of a mechanical flying machine by dodos in 1803 (and the subsequent suppression of the fact by humans) ; and Track 8 is called Historic 1632 recording of Dodo calls (Courtesy of the descendants of Midshipman Alex Whammond). The publicity material is unusually self-deprecating and, of many gems, my favourite is the description of Cormac Byrnes bodhran playing as complex morse-code-based rhythm patterns which he broadcasts from his bedroom to try and contact the intergalactic Space Dodos. You can only be this irreverent about your playing if you are very good or if you are sufficiently novice that you're unaware of it. Dodo Street are definitely not a band of novices." --Folking.com

Description

A cult classic known in the dark circles of the accordion world, this album displays all the talents of Amy Thatcher at age 16.
